GLENN A. BERGENFIELD: A lot of my cases involve two parts to it. One is the thing that went wrong, the area of the law that wasn't handled well by the lawyer. The second part of it is--after the mistake sort of blossoms, instead of telling their client made a mistake, what often times happens is they tend to cover it up. And then the lawyer says, "Well, the reason the case failed is not because of my mistake. It's because the case was never any darn good to begin with." Of the thousands of cases I've been consulted on and the hundreds of cases that I've handled, I'd say lawyers very rarely say, "Look, this was just my fault. I accept the blame." It's a rare thing. Every person and every family has a story that they tell themselves about how their life is going or has gone. When the people come to me, usually the story is at a very terrible point. Everything's gone wrong, even the attempts to fix it. Everything is blasted. And it hasn't been fixed. And what motivates me is trying to turn the story around so that they can say a lot of terrible things happened in my life. There was a lot of adversity. But at the end of the day, things came out okay.
